2007 - Year of the Dolphin

The UN Convention on Migratory Species has declared 2007 the Year of the Dolphin.

Dolphins are intrinsically tied to our cultural history and awareness. Living beside us in our surrounding oceans and rivers, they are a living treasure of our blue planet. However, their survival is becoming increasingly difficult. Dolphins need clean and quiet oceans, protected areas and people who care.

Here are some key facts about dolphins:

* Dolphins are aquatic mammals believed to have evolved more than 10 million years ago. The 40 species vary in size from 1.2 metres (4 ft) to 9.5 metres (30 ft) and weigh from 40 kg to 10 tonnes. They are carnivores, eating mainly fish and squid.

* Found worldwide in the shallow seas of the continental shelves, dolphins are highly social and move in groups, called schools or pods, of about 20 to several hundred.

* Breeding appears to have seasonal peaks in spring and autumn. Gestation lasts 10 to 11 months and newborns are about one metre long. They reach sexual maturity at three years old.

* Dolphins are considered to be among the most intelligent of animals. Greek and Hindu mythologies portray them as being friendly to humans.

* It is said in some esoteric societies that man is the dream of the Dolphin.

* Dolphins are reported to have been used for military purposes ranging from finding undersea mines to rescuing trapped divers.

Baby Dolphins Snared In Fishing Nets
* Major threats to their survival include entanglement in fishing nets, marine pollution, prey depletion and hunting.

* Scientists have developed an artificial insemination technique and ways of freezing and transporting sperm for captive dolphins.

Prince Albert dives in Monaco's waters to protect dolphins
* The Year of the Dolphin will be part of the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development. A campaign under Prince Albert II of Monaco, involving non-governmental organisations and the private sector, has been launched to protect them.

In addtion to dolphins being, like you said, the most intelligent of animals according to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy... "the most remarkable book ever to come out of the great publishing corporations of Ursa Minor - of which no Earthman (or Earthwoman) had ever heard of either", dolphins are the second most intelligent beings on Earth. We, humans, are the third most intelligent. However, both dolphins and humans are inferior to the hyperintelligent pandimensional beings who manifested themselves as mice so that they can experiment on us (yet again we have misinterpreted this relationship and we think we are experimenting on them!).

Oh but no! It does not stop there. "Curiously enough, the dolphins had long known of the impending destruction of the planet Earth and had made many attempts to alert us. Most of their communication were misinterpreted...again... as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for tidbits... Their last message was interpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backward somersault through a hoop while whistling the "Star Spangle Banner" but in fact the message was this: So long and thanks for all the fish!"

Sorry about that Lilla...had to get that out of my system. If you haven't read the book, you wouldn't really understand that. Great book, though.

Read your post. Thought it was wonderful. I love dolphins too. Did you know I had a pet dolphin once? Yeah... actually I didn't. It turned out to be a huge, mutated-like catfish in our pond. I did call name him 'Dolphin' though!.... well... that is until our pond dried out.

Hi Ob, [can I call you ob – save keystrokes and all that?]

*l-ing ol, loudly*

I think I cut my teeth on Douglas Adams’ trilogy and blame him for my sometimes bizarre – slightly left of centre – take on life. That and because I come from Arthur’s neck of the woods which is a strange place to start with…

He is not the first to have such imaginings about the dolphins and I leave you with an image here from the ancient Mexican Wingmakers site of esoteric knowledge and chamber paintings of ancient wisdom and beliefs …

I’m glad you got that of your chest btw, you brightened my day by doing so, and I hear your concerns. It looks like some really great people are finally climbing on board though to take an active interest in the welfare of our ‘brothers and sisters’ of the oceans… the way I see it, is that it’s our fishing practices that have to change… we need new inventors and young minds to work out a way to catch the fish, without catching the dolphins…

I am sorry to hear about your little ‘dolphin’ and I hope that we both get to live our dream and swim with the dolphins, one day soon.

Lilla

Ps I had written [what I now think was, quite probably] a funnier reply to you and lost it in the ‘create comment’ phase… dam annoying that…

Year of the Dolphin... not a bad idea at all, and it adds a strange sense of joy to the soul. I swear, sometimes I feel just like one of those baby dolphins caught in the nets.

Great post, as always!

5 Books not 3, Lilla.

Oh, and I can't swim. I lived in Florida for 6 years.... water, fear of drowning, sharks, jellyfish, sharp, pointy fish with bright colors.... but beautiful white sandy beaches. Worse of all though... I have a fear of tornadoes and I'm living in tornado alley!

Still waiting for a break,

It's the year of the dolphin? Too bad the Chinese river dolphins aren't here to celebrate it with us...!

Lilla,

I love Dolphins. What of their ability to heal the sick and their ESP. They are really exceptional creatures of very high intelligence, sometimes exceeding that of man, definitely higher IQ than a collective of our dumb brothers and sisters.

There is so much about Dolphins that is incredible, I guess we'll hear more as their year progresses.

Hi Lilla!

Wonderful, wonderful post you have got there!

One of my most favorite mammals is the dolphin and if this year IS the year of dolphins, I'd be sure to remember to have it all out on dolphin decorative designs to remind everyone about the awareness as well.

Thank you so much for the information!

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and responses ... it gives me great joy to know that so many of you also support this cause ...

Deorre,
Thank you for your cool comment, so encouraging...

-Ob,
What's that? Five books you say? ... wow, still more to go, *woo hoo* I got side-tracked with his tangent into words - The Meaning of Liff ((hillarious)))... but I digress...
No swimming with, then ... just admiring of ... just as good...

Cibby,
.. so mysterious, you've got me, I haven't got a clue about them, what has happened? [I'm worried now, trying not to picture the worst ... it sounds ominous ...]...

Katyzzz,
*you crack me up* ... I love the structure of their society, although I just learned, they also have rape problems too; and they also exile the offender ... Yes, hopefully more good news as the year progresses...

Jessica,
Yes indeedy it is ... go spread the wonderful word far and wide ... maybe we could use dolphin tags on our orble blogs and posts too ... or the logo at least on my posts ... thanks for the idea my warrior sistah...

Damn, I love dolphins ... the way they speak, the way they move, the fact that they always look like they're smiling ... and apparently the only animal in the world that fornicates for fun! wahey!

Thanks for your comments ... yes way cute, amongst the cutest on the planet ... although breaking it down for me causes headaches as I love all living things... but Dolphins rock, no doubts about it...

MelissaA,
I loved Flipper ... watched every episode I reckon... I enjoyed the movie with Paul Hogan in it too... was it Paul Hogan? I'm sure it wasn't the same dolphin though!

Bryn,
...trust you to know that! I thought pigs did too? The more I learn about dolphins the more I ache when I see them caught in nets ... I don't eat tuna because i'm allergic to seafood, but if I did, I would have stopped eating it a long time ago.

Are there companies that guarantee that no dolphin is hurt in the process of their Tuna and can they do that?

Hi Lilla

It's good to see the dolphin being recognised. With the many hardships the species faces, it's always nice when something is done to raise people's awareness of these beautiful creatures.

And good for you for passing on this important message.

Hi Lilla,

I really like Dolphins a lot. They're spunky, about our size, and helpful creatures.

I love the part about esoteric societies considering humans to be dolphin's dreams. Puts things into a different perspective.

Great post as always!

Thank you all for your comments, again wonderful to realise that so many care for these creatures as much as I do... it really makes me wonder why so little is done for them to save them from fishing nets and such things .. it's obviously not becuase we don't care?

Is it because we've been made to feel so powerless?

Bryn

When I see them in the wild, I can never tell them apart? But you are right, we must not forget our porpoisely brothers and sisters either. ALL HAIL THE DOLPHINS AND PORPOISES!!!

Hey Andrea,

As I said, I might look at a post as to how we can become more directly involved...

thanks for the idea...
)

HI Peg,

Yes it does, that painting above [scroll up comments section] is a part of a collection. It is the final chamber painting found in Mexico and the yellow shape connected to the floating human's navel is a dolphin! SO much symbolism and no interpretation since the distruction of the Library of Alexandria.

Theories?

Plenty.

One is that the dolphins are our link to Atlantis ... we've been a part of this planet together for a very long time, I think. That feels right to me.

I'm no Dr Dolittle, but I'm sure I had a conversation with one through telephathy in Coffs Harbour Aquarium last year. Something tickled my brain?

I'm not arrogant enough to think we are the first to inhabit this planet, perhaps we will not be the last either, unlike Douglas Adams's Hitchikers Guide suggests ... *lol*

.. thanks for stopping on by and letting me see kitty again, you know how it melts my heart each time I see you... *aah*

Lilla

Hi Ashish,
Nice to see you and I agree, with the exception of kittens - especially Pegasus' lolling kitty [above] - they are pretty cute.

What's your most favourite cute thing?

Hi, Lilla. Long time since I dropped by. Anyway, since the UNCMS has made 2007 the Year of the Dolphin, why don't they implement a knowledge dissemination program to clear up the undeserved reputation of the orca? They are dolphins too, after all. Just a thought.

-RC

P.S. That first picture you used in your post would look really good as a desktop wallpaper.
24. January 20th 2007 @ 09:11. Lilla Says:
Hi RC,

I couldn't agree more and I've set about the task of looking into new innovations in other parts of the world, that clealry show how absolutely archaic our government is when it comes to these matters ... they do nothing and yet we still vote for them ... well someone is?

I have added it to my many beautiful desktop pickies, you're right!

Always good to see you lone wolf,

Lilla
