Enviro Warrior - Wake up and smell the Homus ... then tread lightly upon the planet.

Only a Few Months Left to Get Rid of Your Incandescant Lightbulbs, or be fined!

A couple of years ago, in what looked like a bold, almost defiant new statement, the Canadian province of Ontario, announced that it was banning the sale of inefficient incandescent light bulbs by 2012. The move came as part of a broader effort to cut energy use by the turn of the decade.

The move by Ontario, Canada's most populous province came shortly after Australia*s similar announcent, which will make us amongst the first countries in the world to be incandescent free by 2010. Too bad we didn't get the vouchers and discount initiatives that Ontario government also handed out, but then the Howard government did give away lots of boxes of free florous...

~oOo~

Australian statistics are harder to find and I don*t have the time today, but the fact is that by replacing all of the 87 million incandescent bulbs in Ontario households with more efficient lighting, such as compact fluorescent bulbs, will cut electricity demand by 6 million megawatts an hour, annually ~ which is enough to power 600,000 homes for a year!

~oOo~

IF YOU DON*T ALREADY KNOW BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN ON MARS : Compact fluorescent bulbs (we are told) use about 75 percent less electricity than old-style incandescent bulb and by replacing about eight of them in your home, can save up to $60 on your electricity bill. Although depending on where you are, they do put the cost of energy up to compensate, so don*t expect too much of a saving!!

~oOo~

The Ontario government went a little ahead of us then and also pledged to only purchase energy efficient bulbs for its own buildings too, something Australia has lagged behind in doing. A spokesperson in Ontario however, said that this one action alone, represented a huge step forward in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, because on a large scale it adds to the equivalent of taking 250,000 cars off the road!

So little at a household level, so much for the planet.

Whilst on the roll, Ontario Energy Minister, Dwight Duncan [left], also announced a number of energy-saving initiatives during 2007, including offering coupons for compact fluorescent bulbs and other energy-saving devices, as well as a 10 percent rebate on electricity bills to consumers who cut power use by 10 percent.

Would be nice to see Kev offer a few of those down under too, hey?

~oOo~

DID YOU KNOW? : That by changing just (1) of your everyday lightbulbs, to a compact fluorescent Energy Saver lightbulb, is the same for the environment as not driving your car for (2) whole weeks!

Not only will you be helping save the environment, but you will also be saving money on your energy bill and although it is not clear how you will be persecuted for burning a normal lightbulb after 2010, but you may save yourself a fine too, or worse, painting public toilets or something on community labour services. So be warned!

Compact Flourescent lightbulbs use at least 2/3 the amount of energy, generate 70 percent less heat, and last up to 10 times longer. So go ahead and change those lightbulbs and save some money as well as some coal.

~ isn*t that a bright idea!

What they really need to do is get rid of all the old ones from the supermarket shelves. That would save the problem because we wouldn't be able to buy them.

I'm going to stock up the old ones. Are you aware that the new bulbs contain mercury? That they cost more to manufacture and transport? That if you accidentally break one, you can spend thousands of dollars of the clean-up? That even one broken bulb can make you violently ill? It's just another lie like "Silent Spring", designed to fool people into going along with something dangerous. Don't fall for it!

Hi Lilla,

I changed over early last year, and there is little to no saving now, as the LX company has ramped up the rates, so now I am using far less LX but am actually paying MORE than when I used the incandescent!!!

It is a blatant rip off that once agin, the idiots in power couldn't see coming.

If I had the money, I'd get off the grid totally through solar/battery and wind.

By the way, an inventor in the Blue Mts where I am came up with a new type of bulb that uses far less LX and lasts much much longer. Of course, no one in govt. would even meet with him.

Lastly, no one is talking about the disposal problem of millions of fluro tubes which have all sorts of nasties in the tube! In addition to this, it has been proved fluro light does have an effect on our general physiology.

We are, once again, setting oursleves up for another enviro disaster.

Hi everyone, thank you all for your great responses! A lot of strong feelings on this one from around the world, no surprise there, as this is yet another transparent myopic, quick~fix option that we are being forced to endure (along with good old earth) and as I said, without the *real savings* being promised ~ especially to the planet or our back pocket nerves. The answer here glares at me when you consider the length of time that these bulbs last compared to the other ones ~ which are also manufactured elsewhere and shipped about the place from China these days ~ where, the long term figures do add up when calculated on the scale of billions of bulbs per annun against one govenrments short term stay in office.

Damo,

I have to agree with you here that LED looks like the way to go if we are to continue to use artificial light. Quite frankly, I hate them all; I shower by candlelight and often wake and write at night (or read) by candlelight too ~ it just makes me feel whole somehow and less edgy? (check Fogs response for the truth on how electric light does cause cancer by affecting seratomin levels int he brain). .

LED still has the disposal problem of harmful chemicals, and I still cannot understand why all this harmful stuff cannot be buried in the useless deserts, instead of next to our local schools and hospitals?

Hi Janet,

That will come at the end of this year and net year you won*t be able to find one, that is unless Mr Rudd has changed the original plan? I haven*t read any update on it from the parliamentary fax stream, yet. . but then John Howard did make the call before there was a global recession going on, despite his part in engineering it, so who knows?

Hi S.L.

Thanks for commenting. You raise such valid points and things that we all know short sighted governments do not address because. . well, *long term* it doesn*t seem to be a part of any government*s agenda. Something that always fascinates the hell out of me in the short term agenda*s promoted by those seemingly real long term speeches. . . something that voters keep buying election after election, when deep down we all know that they only care about the hext four years. Since these light bulbs last up to eight years, well it really may well be the next persons problem and not theirs, so who cares because the population will forget (again) and just go and blame the next bunch of politicians who try to fix the ongoing malaise of the industrial boom that keeps spiralling down into oblivion. For now this fixes the problem of growing energy costs, panders to the free trade relations offering the madnitory new trade and manufacturing requirements of keeping the big bucks spinning at the top end, whilst appeasing the masses with the false sense of security in lessening the reliance on dwindling coal imports and mining costs at the bottom end (or coal face) and/or face value of the environmental scale of the operations.

As for the *big Spill Accident,* well there is the media hype to wash it all clean IF it should be unfortunate enough to happen, otherwise the truth can continue to be avoided with minial ease by the ever wonderful media circus and its distractions; with some new documentary on how the mercury in thermometers was at first thought to be able to harm millions and so dangerous and yet look how it has helped mankind etc etc blah blah Que long historical documentary on the development of mercury from the flat earth stage to being in everything today as if that makes it a matter of safety, in all its newfound positive uses in society today from weather prediction of Tsunami*s and global warming, to saving lives in hospitals .. you know the drill.

I would be the last to fall for it and am delighted to see so many of my fellow orblers *awake!* However, I am also amongst one of the first nations on the earth to have to comply to it as a law, and as I said, I wonder how they will police it. The question intrigues me as does the policy over there in the US where you are. Did Bush also jump on this band wagon back then, or is that something Obama is left to do to be seen to be progrressively catching up with the world of incandescent invention? . . I am most curious, if you have the time to enlighten me?

Thanks for adding your sanity.

Hi Foggily,

Hahaha as I said, don*t get too excited about those savings : we saved 17% on our bill when we put the free box of goodies into our power sockets and within three months our power costs had gone up by ... wait for it... you guessed it, 17% !!! hahaha I had to laugh my head off at the newfound sincerity of the merger of government and power companies in making a *better future for my children!* A done deal alright.

I shower by candlelight and often write by the same too, as I like the way it makes me feel, so I agree on the physiology of it all being affected, ( I actually wrote a post <<here>> about the evidence of artificial light affecting our Melatonin production which is now proven to increase breast cancer in nightshift workers : both male and female) . . but the funny thing is, we also put in a rain tank too and the less power and water we use, the more our water and energy costs go up ~ we are yet to SAVE a cent?

As for disposal, to reitterate from above, of course there are no long term plans yet, just another environmental disaster to cover over with lots of media hype, and diversonary tactics, when the newer policies that will also go nowhere; as long as there remains living breathing, human *grist for the mill*. I think they are hoping for a miracle (as always) and personally as I said to Damo, I cannot understand why the desert isn*t utilised more for dangerous chemical waste, instead of the local landfill behind our hospitals and schools, not to mention water catchment areas?

The simple logic of this simple fact escapes me?

Otherwise, as we all know, Governments only think in four year terms, lets not kid ourselves, however, you can be assured that the envirowarrior will be looking into this waste problem in posts to come, with some lengthy research on how, when, where and why, florous are causing new forms of environmental and human tragedy and illness ~ probably in a third world country, of course ~ somehwere down the track a bit, when the ozone is a little more depleted and the methane ooze a little more toxic and predominant than it is today. What are we all worrying about *tongue in cheek* methane is only low on the ppm ratings yet in comparison the mass of the total of the earth*s atmospheric capacity.

Perhaps the government of the day is hoping 2012 will wipe us all out anyway and that will put paid to it? However I believe they already have alternatives to mercury, but it is still the cheapest alternative and utilises existing infrastructure : you now governments think in short term, and the conglomerates to bottom line profits.

WHY? because up until only recently, the general population couldn*t think long term either. . that is where environmentalism is so unique as it comes of age (shame it has to, but there you are); it has introduced that very element into the government*s emerging needs to consider the long term impacts, something never thought of before in human history . . the need to placate people on the long term affects of its activities and delivery of those short term promises as a matter of course for election popularity. . ha ha caught out. No wonder there are so many paid organisations out there trying to discredit and minimalise the environmental movement as a bunch of greenies with the only wilderness between their ears... unfortunately so many people fall for it too, but as we sicken, thankfully, less and less each election.

Again, my main intrigue here in the short term come 2010, is how they will try and police the use of the old incandescent? House to house knockers perhaps, with officious looking faces and brief cases; carrying little clipboards and voltage metres?

Thanks for adding your sense to the chorus of the sane!

Thanks also to you the Nameless one, you are right on the issue of Mercury. I will try to get over there soon, today is going to be a really busy one.

Tap search Com Ed,

Well said. .. and thank you for all the links, it shall make interesting reading this afternoon with my cuppa. Nice to see activitists out there trying to make it better.

I really appreciate you taking the time to stop buy and will catch up again with you soon, your 8,000 post is most intriguing and I will comment on it later. I am just trying to organise a tow truck to take my car to be repeaired and it is late as there has been a large smash out on the freeway, which is delaying the whole morning schedule . . Aaargh!

[B]Thanks to you all, these comments are great and they have left the envirowarrior feeling good about living in a world where so many people are awake. . and proving that as a species we are evolving to recognise the very real threat we pose to ourselves and the need for governments to start to reflect this and think more long term than their short term stay in office.

It's sort of like the "Emperor's New Clothes", when everyone assumes the Climate Change is being caused by humans and we "have to do something." Nobody has noticed that the Emperor is naked and the climate will do what it's going to do, with or without us.

Yes S.L.

another really valid point. I went to a really interesting symposium the other week where this fellow Ivan Stein was talking about the 2012 shift . . all that stuff aside, what did catch my ears is that he made mention of current data indicating that if it wasn*t for the currrent Global warmining we may well have already started our decline into the next ice age. it is actually the nice greenhouse stuff keeping us inclimate atm . . ha ha. A quick check of the solar activity (or lack of it due to our position in the universe atm) confirmed this quite quickly!

That*s not to say that as a species we are not piggies who do crap in our own back yards and the stuff floating in the ocean, the clearing of land and advancing deserts caused by increases in the beef cattle isn*t polluting the very food we eat and water we need to drink, but then I guess as a species we have the ability to adapt to and mutate right along with it?

If you are curious you can google videos ~ look for Ivan Stein 2012, there is a great one he gave in the states, but his most recent talks were here in Maleny in Australia (March 3oth or thereabout). There are two parts 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 and in 2 of 2 you will find some really interesting maps of what the world will look like after 2012, according to his *evidence?*

I keep an open mind and will post on this in the esoteric bookshop soon.

Thanks again for adding your sanity to this issue.

S.L.

you have hit upon one of my current pet subjects and I have (am reading) much on this topic from hard core science, to tribal prophecy and channelled visions ; I had not read this one and thank you for recommending it, I will track a copy down.

May I also recommend one to you which suggests that 2012 is only the middle of the entire 26,000 year cycle when the time is read off the Mayan *steeles* or totem type calendar markings... all with staggering Mayan accuracy also, by Barbara Hand Clow called The Mayan Code. Of course, the fascinating thing being that the Mayan*s are the only ones (so far) to have etched and recorded this 26,000 year cycle at all.

I have only posted a few articles and book reviews on 2012 on my Esoteric bookshop blog so far as time is so short, but some of the stuff may interest you too because the final decision on this one seems to me to be as sketchy as Y2K and Global Warming put together, although my bones agree with you and many authors in something cyclic and *BIG* is going on even to the magnetic polarities shifting direction, which is already happening. Whislt it doesn*t meant the earth will flip over, it does suggest some stormy weather and a few big waves, not to mention a little siesmic activity here and there

In this respect you would enjoy Ivan Stein*s talk, although it really is a little dystopic too. as was another very funny book I read called *Have a Nice Doomsday* by Nicholas Guyatt who postulates on why millions of Americans are looking forward to the end of the world when he journey*s to the heaartland of your Bible belt (much like our own here in Queensland), but one which uncovers the obsession in a strange, funny and unsettling way. I mention it as I know your leaning towards political stands on things such as this and how the fact that this obsession (and his research) seems to stretch to the white house, may well prove a good read for you too?

Thanks again for the recommendation, I look forward to reading this new viewpoint, whilst we wait and see?

Hi Lilla,
on 2012, don't forget to read Hapgood's Theory, which probably started all the investigation, although mainstream scientists refuse to speak of it, discarding it as "old hat", but, Einstein helped him develop the theory, and wrote a forward supporting it...

I think we have 'chatted' about this before, it is a rather calamitous scenario, but, we are essentially spirit beings inhabiting a body in a particular dimension, and it isn't the only dimension we inhabit, as some scientists are beginning to believe.

Also, there have been reports of a new wave emitting from the Earth's core, a verticle wave, and the core is slowing... plus, the sun has had the longest period between sun spot activity in a great age, and, it is also changing...

Well, my take on the Global Warming thang is, they had to invent something to make the populace feel as if they can do something about the ensuing changes, a clever distraction... I also think the mass beachings of whales may be related to the polar shift, maybe, have not read anything on that yet and it could just be because of mercury pollution etc affecting them and/or US Navy strong sonar..

We live in interesting times...

cheers

That we do my friend,

All of the above I think. It is not any one thing : well it is actually it is about our position within the milky way that is what is going on, something quite unimportant to the universe, about as much so as the local geological dig is to the ant colony on the other side of the mound. . well, except that eventually in our case, as our solar system moves through the glactic centre of the universe as we know it, it may well mean the equivalent of that legendary hyperspace freeway going through *chuckle* we have all the clues, (1) don*t forget your towel, (2) get your babel fish now while they are still cheap and not in big demand, and (3) don*t forget to avoid Vogon poetry, its a bit like Klingon opera, not for the faint hearted.. which brings me to (4) choose your exit ramp carefully when the time comes and make sure you have your faith intact, as it might be pandamonium over there for a while till things sort themselves out?

/seriously/ I had heard about the core slowing and the lack of sun spot activity does coincide with the passing through of the galactic centre (as we do every 26,000 years or so). The corre will stop altogether apparently around 2012 as we silently pass through the very centre of the Galaxy we inhabit to what the Maya call the period of the fifth sun and the heaven realms. Now some reckon that means that for three days the earth will stop spinning, one side facing the sun and cooking to shishkebab brown, the other into three days of night and darkness, and cold hell. *raising my left eyebrow*

Many *in the know* in this field of study feel that as we emerge on the other side of this 26,000 year cycle, and start to rotate again it will be counter clockwise to the way we are going now. That means the sun will rise int he west and set in the east. well northeast and southwest actually as we will also shift about 35 degrees. The northern polarity will reverse with the southern one causing the 35 degree rotation. Most of Australian coastline (ALL major cities according to Ivan Stein*s recent 2012 talk here in Maleny) will go under as NZ rises out of the sea apparently, so the idea is to get to higher ground. Still Oz does better than Europe in so many scenarios, especially if you live at Uluru! (Google Videos has all the latest from these talks with the maps)..

I read a fascinating account in another book, of how magnetic levels of the ley lines affect the human psyche and its ability to deal with change. Usually noted that high readings are found in countries of fast political changes are alwys on the go, as opposed to the lower levels prevalent in places like central Russia where nothing much has changed in over 1,000 years! Of course all this must affect the whales, you are so right there and God knows what with all that human sonar meddling on top of it, very likely as the new fishing trawlers track and drive the schools hither and thither to suit the bottom line of ensuing profits and the navy fight their endless terrorists that probably ride inside the whales like jonah himself *raising my other eyebrow*

Personally, I am all for a shift in things as the madness is so obviously stupid now it is beyond belief and I am sure that we will live to see many more interesting things before we catch up on the astral, 5th heaven or 9th plane again, where I am really hoping there is no more TV and advertising executives who only learned how to peddle pawn scum to the unsuspecting in this dimension, are put into retraining camps to learn useful techniques of loving and caring for each other in more useful ways to humanity

Hahaha my good fellow, as for Hapgood*s sanity (which I have only skimmed and will now delve into) [thank you], like La Roche and a few other true geniuses like Wal Thornhill and so many economic and scientific brains who pioneer in the truth fields of exopolitics and rebuilding the world in the golden age to come? . . it is common knowledge that it takes the mainstream about 100 years to catch up and even start to consider the very changes that idiots like Einstein actually postulated and proved were the basis of our entire state of being ~ and play ~ CHANGE being the bedrock of life itself within the core of exopolitics itself. Yet so defiantly disputed so readily by the scientists who spend their days proving it. Surely others have noticed too that the moment you quantify something absolutely, it shifts into something else, absolutely!

Hahahah Has there ever been such an irony and doesn*t it all come back to finding your own inner peace?

I like the way you think and thank you for the chuckle, always a pleasure *chatting.*

thank you for your incredibly generous nature and the sharing of your insights and wisdom, only the wisest (spiritually not mortally) of the wise know to share their purview of knowledge.

That is interesting, regarding the solar system centre, and the stopping of the Earth's rotation, it actually makes a lot of sense...wonder which side we will end up on... both will be rather bad I suspect.

As it happens, I live one kilometre above sea level, and have warned friends to get away from the coastlines.

However, the massive and very secret preparations that the developed nations have been involved in, the last...well...probably at least 30 years, suggests there will not be too many places above ground that will be safe...if any...well...none is probably more accurate.

I can only wish that you are rewarded for being so gentle a spirit and are given (at the designated time), an entry pass for one of the underground 'arks'.

A new software company in the U.S. has a program that tracks what long haul shipping shipping does to the environment in just the U.S. alone.

If you are worried about the ecology the first thing you need to do is to stop free trade. Just imagine what long haul ocean, air, rail and trucking does to the environment. Also there is very little control over "dirty" manufacturing in other lands.

There are no walls up into sky that stop all this pollution from traveling the earth.

Ponder this too. If globalization works, just think what the millions of more automobiles in China and India will do to the world. It would end it, no matter what the cars are running on. Even if solar power is used, the massive "dirty" manufacturing needed to produce that many cars would end it all.

Hi. I Am seeing a lot of arguments on the reasons to use different types of lights. In colder climates incandescent lighting does have the benefit of heating your house. The energy saver bulbs are only manufactured in China and must be transported with higher energy use if they were made here at home.
