Bright Lights, Waste Energy ... and Cause Breast Cancer?
Epidemiologist Richard Stevens of the US Dept. of Energy Labs, has discovered a link between growing amounts of breast cancer in women of the western world, since the 1980s, and the light pollution of major cities.
He stakes his claims on the fact that breast cancer rates are significantly higher in industrialised countries, where night-time lighting is more prevalent, than in developing nations.
What the researches found, was that exposure to bright lights at night-time, decreases the human body’s production of melatonin; a hormone secreted at night, which regulates our sleep/wake cycles. It seems that decreased melatonin production is one of the major contributors to breast cancer.
Whilst I always feel that there is rarely one thing that causes all things, this new evidence is gaining weight with researchers everywhere. David Blask of the New-York based Mary Imogene, Research Institute adds that : ‘Light at night, is now clearly a risk factor for breast cancer.’
Go figure.
The problem comes as a shock to night shift workers, who are most at risk of breast cancer from 'light pollution.' In fact, another researcher, William Hrushesky of a South Carolina-based Veterans Affairs Medical Centre, discovered that female night shift workers have a 50% higher incidence of developing breast cancer than other working women.
As if we need further proof that our modern lifestyle is killing us… It’s conclusive … for women at least. Those women with high melatonin concentrations, have lower rates of breast cancer.
So, the prescription from the experts and Prevention magazine is this : '...get nine hours of sleep nightly in a dark room devoid of both interior (especially electronic computer screens) and exterior (street lamps) light sources.'
Anyone who has studied the ancient art of placement … Feng Shui … will already know the taboos of electronics, lights and mirrors in bedrooms anyway, right?
Well, a study of 12,000 Finnish women, also found that those who slept nine hours nightly had less than one-third the risk of developing a breast tumour, than those who slept only seven or eight hours.
I’ve been telling my family to leave me alone to sleep for years. It’s amazing the number of people who are quick to quote the (old) text-book 8 hours is enough dogma…”yeah! bla bla… maybe for you it is… I don’t care, I NEED nine hours, minimum!”
It was found that even switching on a bright light for a trip to the bathroom, can have an affect, so dim nightlights … in fact switch them off… and use a candle, if you still don’t know the way around your own house in the dark.
This information certainly gives, ‘weaning the kids off night lights,’ a new meaning, doesn’t it? I suppose it affects male melatonin levels too… the data is inconclusive on that one...
Ladies, it seems that apart from wasting natural resources, and confusing countless birds and animals, trees and aquatic algae; it's clear that unnecessary light pollution is dangerous to your health too.

The human body was not designed to live in 'modern' times.
This is scary LL.
We usually leave a hallway (energy efficient) light on for the youngest but thank goodness we all like to sleep in the dark!
...and I've always had a very paranoid feeling about computer screen and TV light...and now you've confirmed it!
Have a great weekend Lovely Lilla....and get as much sleep as possible...although, considering all that you do, I do not know where you find the time!
much pyaar...

I sometimes sleep with my lights on, especially when I dose off from reading a book!
I'd better start practising light-less sleeps at night before having extra growth on my chest, ew!
Good post and good warning to all of us. I'll better forward this to more of my friends to read them!
Have a blessed weekend

I enjoy reading these posts ...
But it's hard for a guy who chain-smokes cigarettes, drinks alcohol, hardly ever eats or ever exercises his body (in a healthy manner, that is), and lives in front of his computer with the blinds shut and artificial lights turned on all day to make a worthwhile comment ...
For all my bad lifestyle habits? I still don't have man-boobs ... I'ts either my metabolism or my Irish/Australian stock ...
I'm finding it more and more difficult as time goes on to take anything seriously ... I'm not having a go at your post ... I just felt like writing a comment on your Blog ... and I'm in a silly mood ... Again? Or still (did I hear someone say? ...
If the Post didn't interest me? I wouldn't read it or comment on it ... Ask anyone ...

It is scary, no doubts about it.
Fortunately I also like to sleep in the dark now too and am happy I could help you to confirm one of your long held suspicions.
Thanks, you too … I’m having the day off and heading up the hill to the Monastery.
It should be good as the Dalai himself is in town .. and the celebrations are afoot ...woo hoo

If this information is as true as some claim, it certainly makes good sense to switch those lights off at night, doesn’t it.
Thanks for passing it on, that is a great compliment.

I’m not sure how to take your backhanded compliment ? *chuckle*
As for your habits?
Well, that is the prerogative of individual choice my friend. I can’t throw stones, nor would I attempt to. Each to their own, I say, for that is how we will be judged.
However, I did read somewhere that my body was my temple. For a while that meant nothing to me until one day, luckily, I was almost forced from it and discovered that there was something still left for me to do, and I needed to stay well to find it, and achieve it. Suddenly, I found I was ready to review a few of my own habits...certainly to look for the middle ground...to stop punishing...me.
I am really flattered that anyone reads my ravings at all, truly… even more so, to know that you do and that you enjoy them. Thank you, it is a great compliment and you honour me by both reading and commenting. You’re always welcome.
I hope you have a good weekend,

I’ve really got to fly now, up to the Monastery, my lift is here in about 50 mins… but I just wanted to reply before I go, for I shall not be back until tomorrow… in orbleland that is an eternity. *lol*
It is scary, indeed, but good that we know these things. Forewarned is forearmed my grandmother always used to say.
Since my traumatic mishap, I have a trick for sleeping when I can’t sleep. It’s called Restavite. You can get it over the counter at the chemist and only need half a tablet. I wouldn't recommend taking the recommended one or two tablets first off, until you’ve tested your tolerance levels. I am very sensitive to substances, so I only need half or three-quarters of a tab.
You’ll sleep like a log with no hang over’s or developing addictions.
It is nice to have my suspicions confirmed too. I was right. It is better to take half a Restavite and sleep than toss and turn and get Breast Cancer.
It’s amazing how our bodies know instinctively, what they need, if only we would listen to them more...
Gotta dash, have a great weekend!

This information should come as a shock to those individuals who live their ives inside a casino. Casinos have "bright lights" 24/7 so that folks will continue to gamble. This is worrisome with folks who work overnight shifts as well as nurses and firemen who work 12 hours on/12 hours off shifts!

I agree.
I think that eventually the shift allowance will have to include 'danger money' as well, to compensate. I don't know what will happen when this news becomes mainstream.
Of course, for an old luddite like me, we were never meant to work all night. That started in the war factories during the early forties, didn't it?
A sorry time for humanity, if you ask me. *chuckle* probably better not to. *lol*
Always a pleasure.

anyhoo, David, I have a bone to pick with you...I have MOOBS!!!!!!!!! And I am proud of them...well...I have to be coz I can't get rid of them! Anyhoo, I should write a poem about man boobs, or moobs, how they could be the answer for bisexual relations....
anyhoo...what of Malcom Turnbull-(shit) convincing everyone to get those small fluro bulbs to save on power etc.
I did, but am left wondering about their long term safety. For in the late seventies or eighties, (can't remember when), there was a scare that they affect your genes, I think it was, maybe DNA?
I wonder if that was established?
Try and find out about that will you Lilla, I'd be interested to read it if you get anything on fluros and the modern bulb version?
cheers

*lol* I don't know about MOOBS, but you sure raise a good point here about these new flouro's ... I will see what I can find out, although being so new, I doubt that there is much around...yet!
I do know that they are supposed to be really bad for your eyes if you read for long periods under them... affecting DNA?
Wouldn't surprise me at all, the 'bottom line' holds no scruples when it comes to such things.
Thanks for your great comment!
