Enviro Warrior - Wake up and smell the Homus ... then tread lightly upon the planet.

New Interactive World Map Brings Climate Change to Your Computer

Now you can now get interactive with new environmentally animated maps of the earth from space through Google Earth. The map(s) illustrate both the current and potential impact of climate change over the next century, and can be viewed on your computer from <<here>>
You will need to download and install the 'google earth' program onto your computer first, in order to run the new climate change maps ... (Green Button located in top-right of screen ... it’s safe and takes about 5 mins with ADSL).

The project is called, Climate Change in Our World, and is the result of co-operation between Google, Britain's environment ministry and the Met Office.

The maps are awesome ... you can zoom in and out of places all over the globe at will, turning the earth with your virtual hand, looking at erosion and wildlife concerns, population, and climate changes of any place you want, in vibrant detail. You can add “layers” of information to your maps, like temperatures/weather, roads, amenities, 3D housing etc.

You can stop the “tour” wherever or 'whenever' you want, by clicking on little icons, which instantly give detailed, up-to-the minute info from NASA, WWF, Greenpeace and other world organisations, as well as juicy tid-bits of info of history from Times on-line. (Great for school projects)...

Each icon is a direct link to a pop-up window and can include video’s, interviews, facts and figures, and the latest on World Environmental meetings and archaeological digs - as they take place - around the globe! (The most current in Germany on Deep Forests and their disappearance).

As lovers of Google Earth will already know, you can find your own place and zoom right in on it, too. Why not have a look and see what your local environmental problems are (or likely to become), and find out who’s doing what about it?

Based on the Google Earth, which uses NASA satellite images, the polar ice shelves are such an interesting place to visit on a rainy afternoon and show the stark reality of the temperatures as they rise (in red) well into the double digits (probably where they show the most). The corresponding information on the ebb-and-melt of each ice shelf makes fascinating afternoon “viewing.”

Now you can be your own scientist (well as far as mainstream pop-science propaganda goes?) .. and run a time lapse series to watch the earth warm under medium case scenarios up to 2100, either from a planetary perspective, or zeroing in on the countries and even cities of your choice.

As the final stand-off between rich and poor nations - over who should make the first move to sharing the 'wealth' - shifts into gear (stand by for my next post on this interesting phenomenon); scientists continue to ring the bell to herald that global average temperatures will rise by between 1.8 and 4.0 degrees Celsius this century, due to carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels for power and transport alone, despite all our civilised ‘good intention protocols’ to curb our greedy habits.

To this end we are being warned to prepare for floods and famines that will threaten millions of lives. Now at least, these new animated maps will help bring that message vividly alive.

Perhaps help us decide where to move and where not to, at the very least?

I’m off to have a look at Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast in 2050.

This seems to be a very interesting tool. Google is always growing and expanding their web tools.

Very, very cool.

Informative and a great resource for our kids to use.

Thanks for the tip - it's now in a missive to our local school to use as part of its recently launched Green Week campaign for children Yr 1 - 6.

awesome gadget, mind you, it could get a tad depressing, i think in this case i might prefer not to know the devil in the detail and just keep going trying to do something

hope you are well.

and also, what an amazing education tool for school students, I studied the fragile planet and we did a field trip to the snowy mountains to see the worlds rarest vegetation the windswept feldmark, imagine what students will be able to see with this, WOW

Hi Whitney,

They are awesome in their scope, aren't they?

This addition is (for me) perhaps the most fascinating....

Thanks for stopping by

MNG,

... that is cool!

I never thought of doing that, and will send it off to my kids ex-teachers today, too...

So much of today's curriculum contains studies on the phenomenon of current world environmental trends, as opposed to the endless (mindless) history of our own school years, without thougth for consequences?

I like the new trend and am glad I could help by passing this along.

Cheers

Louie,

Contraire my friend, albeit that for those of us that are already aware of the enourmity of the situation, perhaps (indeed) the same ole horror peep show ... But for the lay person ... a whole new world of information and awareness ... and possible action??

We can only hope

Louie,

Absolutely where schools and the next generation are concerned... I am truly sorry for what they are inheriting from the wasteful indulgences of their ancestors ... although, perhaps it is more a case of 20/20 hindsight (as is the usual human condition) *chuckle* I maintain that as a species we really are not that bright!

Absolutely Kim, *laughs* not to mention the smart real estate investor ... no point buying up big where it's set to flood, I guess ... unless you're building something acquatic that also floats?

Thanks for stopping by...

Hi Miss,

Oh I hear you... I think I just sat here with my jaw on the ground for a full five minutes! *laughs* it is certainly something that you visit in snippets, here and there... or more specifically for me, as a research tool when I am looking at a specific area for an article and need up to the minute information.

As I said, it is a great tool for my kids study... perhaps better suited to your son and the younger mind in navigating, quickly?

Hahaha, my head is still reeling from the last time I globe trotted on google.
