Its Official : Flying Foxes Hate The Sound Of Louis Armstrong.
Apparently, after being plagued for three years by the screeching of thousands of flying foxes roosting around her southern Queensland home, Val Ireland is sleeping soundly again, after discovering that a steady diet of Louis Armstrong, Mantovani and Patsy Cline was more than the flying foxes could stand.
A neighbour thought of the idea of music repellent and neighbours mounted loudspeakers in trees and put CDs on rotation with high volume. All 14,000 have now left Vals Verandah and are happily roosting half a kilometre away.
It was tough going finding the Louis Armstrong albums, but it seems the townspeople came to the rescue with donations.
"I rousted out a couple of my own, and then another resident brought up a Mantovani, so we had a bit of variety," Ms Ireland told reporters whilst playing disc jockey for the evening.
Vals neighbour Maud Drewery said the flying foxes were still in town, but not annoying their neighbourhood.
Certainly one for the conservationists to remember, when shifting large colonies of Flying Bats?
With that selection of music on offer, its a wonder that the neighbours didnt leave as well!

Refreshing post, Lilla.
I read a long time ago that some 7-11's in the US play easy listening music to make the gangs move away.

Oh well, just as long as they are annoying somebody else then.

Maybe the secret key to finally getting rid of the vampires in the world is a here and there of Louis Armstrong.

I am glad you enjoyed it and it reminded you of nice strolls through those beautiful lush gardens. I remember them well from my years living in Sydney too.
Up here in Q, we have hundreds of them and they fly out to the islands from their in land caves each night on sunset. The skies are black with thousands of them, all silently whooshing overhead.
Its when they land int he trees that the pow wow starts up and boy is it noisy!
Well now we all know what to do...
Hope all is well.

Montovani I concur with wholeheartedly, and Patsy Cline is an acquired taste (except "Walkin' after Midnight"--that's a classic)--but Louis Armstrong?
Come on, the man is the Father of modern Jazz!
This sucks for me, because I love flying foxes and I love Armstrong as well.
I guess if I'm ever fortunate to live near flying foxes again, I'll have to start a Jazz appreciation class just for them....
