Enviro Warrior - Wake up and smell the Homus ... then tread lightly upon the planet.

Victoria's Secret Is... Green ...

The publisher, US retailer Limited Brands of the Victoria's Secret catalogue agreed this week stop using paper produced from the habitat of a threatened Canadian caribou herd, a move environmentalists have hailed as a victory in efforts to limit logging in Canada's northern boreal forests.

Canadian Caribou
The environmental groups involved were particularly upset about logging in the Rocky Mountain foothills of Alberta, which provides important habitat for the woodland caribou, and Limited Brands will now, not only refrain from using paper produced in that area, but have also agreed to stop purchasing any products from Canadian lumber, pulp and paper producer West Fraser Timber Co Ltd., which has significant logging operations in Alberta's foothills and British Columbia.

Alessandra models Victoria Secret's Angelic intentions...

ForestEthics, the environmental group that has waged the public relations campaign over Victoria's Secret's paper use, said the hope is to raise the bar on availability of environmentally friendly paper and pulp for commercial use across the board. As a result, Victoria’s Secret catalogue will use either 10 percent recycled paper, or 10 percent new paper from sources certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as having been produced in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Victoria's Secret sends out more than 350 million catalogues each year marketing its intimate apparel products. Limited Brand's other units include Bath & Body Works, Henri Bendel and Diva London, which eats away substantially at the forests each year.

The northern, or Boreal, forest of Canada’s vast north, plays a critical role in the planet's health as one the world's largest storehouses of carbon, which is released back into the atmosphere by logging, mining and energy development with dire consequences if not monitored properly.

The woodlands and wetlands that stretch thousands of kilometres from the Atlantic coast into the Yukon are also seen as providing critical wildlife habitat.

Caribou Habitat
Canada's woodland caribou -- similar to Eurasian reindeer -- number about 184,000 and are designated as "threatened" by the federal Canadian government. Individual herds require 9,000 square kilometres (35,000 square miles) on average to thrive.

This step forward is exciting, because despite the conflict of the public relations campaign that included more than 700 protests against Victoria's Secret, the deal showed that environmentalists and industry can work together. Limited Brands said the environmental campaign -- which did not include boycotts -- had no real financial impact on it, and the cost of changing its paper buying policies was also expected to be immaterial to profits, compared to the changes for the environment.

Lilla,

Two things:

- I'm thrilled that Victoria's Secret made this decision. Now, I can continue 'shopping' in the catalog, guilt-free.

- after seeing wild Caribou bounding through the bogs of northern Canada, you'll be humbled by how magnificent they seem... and you'll be terrified at the idea that someone might tear down these forests!

Hi Lilla!

This is such great news! Although I am not a Victoria Secret fan (since it's pricy for me), but I am very happy about the company's decision. This will indeed help a lot more to conserve those forest!

I remembered I used to watch this cartoon when one day, all the books are actually plastic with digital chips inside. Everyone will own that "book" and goes to a kiosk to "download" the magazines they want to purchase. Each page of a particular magazine will be downloaded to the digital plastic papers and you can just read them like a book, and not staring at the monitor.

Probably this innovation will come in future. The saddest part is the cartoon actually portrays the world has very small percentage of natural resources and all nothing but urban jungle. So the trees were preserved and limited for logging.

Yes Cibbuano,

...truly a leap forward for guilt free shopping and caribou... I believe you on the majestic beauty of far north Canada... we almost emigrated there... but my parents changed their minds for Australia at the last minute becuase my Mum said she didn't like the cold...go figure, although truth be told, I am probably grateful and don't even know it...*lol*

hopefully the lack of financial loss to make the change will lead the way for others to follow so that other critters and leap about in other forests around the planet too...

cheers
Lilla...

Jessica,

a great vision for the future... if only they recycle computers to do it... the amount of waste in landfills caused by computers right now is ridiculous when you realise that there is gold and copper in them... I used to know a fellow who spent his days pulling down old machines and collecting all the different metals from them - especially the gold... a full time job, he made a good living out of it and cruised around the world once every five years...

...I think the electronic aspect should be solar driven and not fossil fuel run...

...very Start Trek my dear...

Great post. I'm not surprised to hear that environmentally conscious decisions don't affect the bottom line. This is exactly opposite to what most politicians tell us.

Hi Adele,

I am so happy to see that changing... in fact environmental issues are becoming the new wave of political agendas [and grandstanding]... so the message is finally getting through...

YIIPPEEE!!!

Time for some really positive change, at last...

Good to see you, again...

I too, like Cibbuano, can now "shop" in the catalogue without environmental angst. It really is good news, and hopefully sets an example for other business and corporations that indeed nature need not be destroyed to financially succeed.

Great post. You are quite awesome with all you offer here.

Lilla....

I am trying to do some kind of survey.

Its like how you read other blogs.Do u every day go there and see if they have posted something new.Or do you feed them like RSS readers.SO you can see if they have written something new and then u go to them.

I have already feeded 15 orble blogs including yours, so i can keep track of it easliy.

12. December 16th 2006 @ 06:13. Lilla Says:
Ashish,

I think I do a bit of both... but am not completely sure because I do not understand 'feeded' and 'RSS'...?

13. December 16th 2006 @ 06:56. Ashish Says:
U see a rss button on every orbvle blog?

Rss feeds allow you to add them to "Your myyhaoo or my google page"

It will display the links to latest 3-4 topics. So it is easy to know if somebody has updated his blog or not.

try mine here
14. December 16th 2006 @ 07:18. Lilla Says:
Aah, thanks Ashish, no I don't use RSS, or feeds or anything, I use the latest posts and [more] selections for latest blogs, Yes/No notification toggles on Orble comments, which notify my private email account and if I still have time to get bored, if it's really quiet, I go to my profile and click on my friends to see what their latest posts are as this is a new feature in Orble. Just click on their tag to go to their profile page and scroll down on the left hand side are all their latest posts and all their latest comments regardless of whare on orble they have occured... I really like this feature lots...

I hope that has helped your survey Ashish,

Lilla...

It's great to see some co-operation between a corporation and big business. It shouldn't be a battle between the two -they should work together to achieve their goals.

Thanks Nina... I agree...this is a great step forward ...

Hi Lilla,

I am from the foothills of the Alberta Rockies (born & raised). We don't have Caribou here as I am from southern Alberta. But we have countless of the garden variety deer everywhere whom I'm sure appreciate not having their habitat dessimated.

Just thought I'd clarify that caribou hang out way way North & saying foothills of Alberta & B.C. is not quite accurate as mid & southern regions of both do not have caribou.

That said, I'm very pleased that Victoria's Secret is doing their part to save habitats for animals & humans alike.

Side note: the two Western provinces of Alberta & British Columbia are true jewels of unimaginable beauty & nature. Anyone with an opportunity of seeing these jems should. You'd love it.

Hi Peg,

thanks for the correction... this is what makes a blog report so much better than mainstream NEWS, because you get exactly this kind of update and not myopic fiction that toutes some party line... fantastic... thanks for taking the time ..

You're right, I would love it and it is on my list of things to do in this lifetime...Gosh I can almost imagine the air from here ... it must be some of the cleanest in the world... I may see you one day soon, then *lol*

thanks again

Hi my dear Lilla,

I hope you will look me up if you do come to the Great White North! It would be a joy to meet you & show you all our magnificent sites. And, yes, the air is so crisp, fresh and clean
...and so is our environment in general: clean, healthy, vibrant forests, mountains, rivers, etc. Keeping it so is a priority for us Canucks.

Take care,

Peg
