Live Earth Concert - July 2007
On Thursday 15th February, the former vice president of America, Al Gore announced plans to team up with Kevin Wall, who produced Live 8 in 2005, producer-rapper Pharrell Williams and actress Cameron Diaz to launch Live Earth, a 24-hour worldwide concert on July 7 to bring attention to disastrous climate changes. The team hopes to bring together more than 100 of the world's top musical acts, in much the way Geldof did for Live Aid and Willie Nelson did for Farm Aid. Some of the performers scheduled to perform at Live Earth include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snoop Dogg, Foo Fighters and Faith Hill

The 24-hour event is planned for July 7 as part of the Save Our Selves Campaign – designed to promote hope for a Climate in Crisis - the promoters of Live Earth hope it will trigger a broad movement to address what Al Gore calls a global climate crisis.
Gore is often mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2008 despite his repeated statements that he's not running. Recently, some former aides met in Boston to discuss a campaign to draft the former vice president. “
The concerts will feature across seven continents and will bring newfound publicity to Gore, who already is enjoying celebrity status with his Oscar-nominated documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth." Gore said he was thrilled that the film, on the perils of global warming, was nominated for best documentary and for best song, the latter nod coming for Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up."
The Academy Awards are Feb. 25.

I'm having so much trouble but switched off, restarted and now it's ok again.
In my frustration I voted for you thinking it would come up as 10 but it would only allow me 1.
But, here I am my little flutterby and I have missed you. But I understand why you haven't been around.
Let's hope this giant effort produces some giant results and that the costs don't outweigh the income.
It's a huge problem, isn't it?
Well done, for all the pains you take.

Yes, lovely to see you and I hope to see you on your site soon too… don't worry about the 10 and 1 point thing ... it’s been horrible all round, and I’ve lost meaning, poetry and words all week, trying to comment on people's posts. Good to see you here though and hopefully I’ll be able to reciprocate soon… I think this will show profit.
Ahmed,
You’re a cynic and I think you’ve missed the point. This isn’t about stopping poverty, it’s about raising awareness of the mess we’re ALL in, especially through the young … not everyone is “switched on.”
J.J.Lynn,
I love your words, right on! I hope it is near you too, I will have no hope here in Australia, but hope it is telecast on TV?
Deorre,
Yes, you are spot on and it is why I get so excited about it.
Wendi,
Wishing you get to go too and I agree on it making a difference – even if it takes a few years to ‘sink in.’
Tracy,
Thanks for your kind words, support and compliments.
Sorry it's taken so long to respond, I've also been having trouble getting on to my own site!

I was reading an article in the SMH yesterday that made me think of you, Lilla. It was about all those little bits and pieces that we use daily that we don't realise we could recycle..it was a bit depressing because we use so many resources that are not replenished, but then it was info that we can use and remember. It takes more awareness and effort but it's worth it.
I'm trying to recycle more and more that I think of and I've really noticed our recycle bin is getting fuller. But I was disheartened to read that sometimes because of the local council, some recycled goods are placed in the general waste area simply because of man power and misfortune....
I think it's still important to continue though, apathy won't help....

I also agree that we all need to do something, just a small thing, but something towards doing our share to ease the burdens... yes, it is also true that some falls by the council wayside, but so much also gets through...
Cynics and pathetic apathetics who just focus on that small percentage of loss (not you Tracy, other smart 'a's that have commented here and there)... annoy me, because it's like saying that I should only focus on the wrong things I've done in my life, or just concentrate on the mistakes. If this was the case none of us would ever climb out of the pit of self-loathing would we...
Now look at what you've gone and made me write...*lol*
thanks Tracy,
great comment...
Lilla ...
PS I will feature similar small things we can all do on future posts, when all the 'big news' is out of the way...
thanks again...

Good timing I was thinking of your site just today... one thought I had on this Live Earth concert is (cheeky) in that it will either help or be the biggest party on the planet... but you know how the old saying goes: if you want to preserve wild life, just have a party!

Live 8 (or was that 7?) was the same thing, it doesn't raise long term awareness, just gives people an excuse to party as far as I'm concerned.
Really, truly, I don't believe the worlds problems can be solved by raising awareness through such means, it just doesn't click, when you do good, you're doing it for the sake of good.
I ask too much of people, but I ask what is necessary.
Movies and Life
I'm glad to hear that it's just the occasional portion of waste that doesn't get recycled. I was disheartened a while ago when some friends were saying that all wasn't recycled despite it being in the correct separate bins. My friend tends to look for conspiracy theories so I wasn't sure if that could be true and I'm glad it's not.
Yes, apathy and the 'not in my own backgarden' are two things that I think slow down progress....
I would be glad to read a post on the small things we can do, that would be great, Lilla.

Okay, say you are right, then what?
What things do you think we need to do to raise awareness to the point where it is on a massive amount of voters lips - enough lips for the government to realise that IT IS IMPORTANT TO THE PEOPLE - the PEOPLE that vote them in. We are talking democracy here, aren't we?
AmandaS,
Yes, a great big, loud, global ROAR… The Environment IS IMPORTANT to us voters, thank you very much… we DO CARE about it! Especially when we go in to vote...
Tracy,
I meant to mention, something you may not realise and which I just discovered, is that Australia pays India (handsomely) to tote away much of our national recycled waste. Indian government being very enterprising (or greedy?), is also buying America’s waste too, I believe? Now, I was reading the other day about the huge problem India has of getting rid of waste? I was there in the late eighties and there wasn’t room for all the people then! God knows where they are putting all that western rubbish.
It was the first time I saw Vultures too, wierdest looking birds I've ever seen... they litter the tips there like giant mutant crows *lol* and the landfills? ENORMOUS!
For me, this all comes crashing back to my pet peeve (that term peeves me *chuckle*), but - you guessed it - PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS ... still being passed out like tissues at a state funeral … I must get on with that letter for Peter Garrett, do you think it'll help?
Someone has got to keep writing…
Will do up that post over the next week or so, when the research is done.
Thanks again Warrior Sista,
especially for recycling ...
Flashes of memories
I reckon this is a great move...it is certainly something that the entire globe is going to take notice of.
People are always on the lookout for payoffs...you certainly wouldn`t get the average Joe donating the $100 or so they will pay for the concert ticket to such a cause....and if they present the message well they may even convert a few hundred thousand out of the 2 billion....here`s hoping anyway!

...that is the material point, isn't it? I don't know whether to take Al at face value on this one... he seems so sincere, but wages for administration is sincere too. And not cheap. *chuckle* Yes a quandry ... I hear you...
Ahmed,
You are right and I hope you and everyone sees 'An Inconvenient Truth,' before the July concerts. I'm sure the concerts will cause a lot of people to do just that.
Thanks for your comment,

Oh my gosh, we send rubbish to India?!!!!! That is atrocious!!!
And yes, the plastic bag thing at supermarkets is ridiculous. I once read an article in a magazine (while I was in the queue at a supermarket, that's the only place I look at them-just to pass the time and sometimes snigger) and someone was saying how she's trying not to use plastic bags but if you're not quick at the check-out, it can be too late. I thought what a load of crap, she was just making excuses.....but it's true and I was wrong! If they start scanning before you're awake (like me), then you can already have your some of your shopping in plastic bags without knowing....isn't that a crime....groceries packed without consent? Sorry, just being daft, I blame the weather, it's toooo hot here!!
Gosh, what a moaning minnie I am today....but my heart is in the right place...awwww
