New Global Carbon Markets
The Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty aiming to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions believed to cause global warming and climate change, the most pressing environmental issues of our time. The treaty requires developed countries to reduce GHG emissions to below 1990 levels, but does not set binding limits on developing countries such as China.
However, the already developed countries who are parties to the Kyoto Protocol recognized that reductions in GHG emissions can often be achieved more economically in developing countries than in developed countries themselves. Therefore the devloped parties have created the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
The CDM enables developing country parties who carry out projects that reduce GHG emissions in developing countries to receive credits for these reductions. These credits can be sold back to developed country parties, which use them to offset their own emission reduction requirements. For the developed country party this is often a more cost-effective option than reducing reductions from their own domestic operations.
Does this fix the problem...?
What's your take on it....

...this is my view too... it still avoids the problems already happening 'back home...' However, it does give me a hopeful kind of feeling - like a possible prelude to some serious future thought towards a domestic Carbon protocol....
....doesn't it?

I guess my main reactions to the movie were:
-- The presentation is compelling, as far as anyone in the audience would know. An Al Gore obviously is a very accomplished speaker.
-- But how really would one know? This might be environmental blasphemy, but to me the takehome message is not to become an instant convert, but to read more deeply into the subject given its importance (something that I haven't yet done...).
-- At one point in the movie, he seems to say that we've fixed the hole in the ozone layer -- the main problem now is carbon emissions.
I'm pretty skeptical he's right...
-- At another point, Gore cites a survey of scientists in which zero disagreed about global warming. And I think one should also be skeptical of this.
Firstly, his survey was of a single global warming journal, which, for all anyone knows, has an agenda. Secondly (according to a friend): most scientists believe in global warming, but there is more disagreement over whether humans are causing it and whether there is anything that can be done about it.
-- At another point, Gore claims that it makes more economic sense to be carbon emission friendly.
If the movie's general claim is accurate -- that CO2 emissions will lead to destruction, then Gore is obviously right -- it's a no brainer choice between gold bars and the planet.
But if the claim is wrong, then presumably the economic rationale is on the side of pillaging and burning and and trying to progress to more efficient technology in the old way. -- After all, presumably it's on these grounds that the US and Australia have refused the treaty -- that they stand to lose money...

I am delighted you went to see this film and that you came back and have shared your impressions with us... really I'm thrillied that you saw it... I hope everyone does...
You pretty much summed it up in your comment...
'..it's a no brainer between gold bars and the planet..' and yes, so far the gold bars are buying the space station exit out of here when that's achieved...I feel that the rest is academic as the facts speak for themselves, however, I think the earth will roll the vermin off her back soon and though many lives will be lost, she will right the wrongs...maybe too simplistic... but plausible..
There is also the fact that tied up in the corporate oil vaults are hundreds of patents for clean, free energy efficient inventions that can turn this planets environment around in 10 years...completely... but the oil will have to run out...they're predicting about 70 years until that happens... so not long now...hopefully...
thanks so much for taking the time to get back to me on it and leaving such a great review...
