Politicians Go Troppo Over Climate Change To Garner Votes

It seems that the message is finally starting to seep into the halls of power, voters are concerned about global warming and climate change, despite not wanting to give up their lifestyle and consumerism… too much... and to meet the rising tide of supply and demand, political leaders worldwide are starting to chant a new mantra, based not on economy, but on growing alarm about global warming…

Perhaps not yet echoed enough in Australia, mainstream parties in Germany, Britain, France, Canada, the United States and Austria now believe that tackling climate change is a vote winner, and previously established Green parties in Germany and Austria are experiencing a renaissance.

In America, Arnold Schwarzenegger won re-election as California governor in a landslide last month, after distancing himself from President George W. Bush, a fellow Republican, and championing new measures he will use to cut the state's greenhouse gas emissions.

Without any clear indication of exactly what she would do in these early days, Hillary Clinton has also joined the world chant of polly-would-be’s and leaped onto the local “green” bandwagon, with strong promises of a dedication to bring real change in-the-air, if elected.

In Britain, Tony Blair and his probable successor Gordon Brown, have made the fight against climate change personal and the leader of the heretofore pro-business Conservative Party, David Cameron, has even recently been polled as winning over voters by talking ‘green.’

Segolene Royal
In France, the need for sustainable policies has been embraced by all parties ahead of the 2007 presidential election. Socialist candidate, Segolene Royal [left] and her likely rival Nicolas Sarkozy, both regularly pepper speeches with references to the environment, just before sneezing from the haze surrounding the top of their platforms.

It seems that everyone wants a piece of the global warming pie… and a belief that the issue is now just as much ‘Blue’ as ‘Green’ is starting to predominate global warming issues within parliament. A thing that most voters see as a “really good thing,” as it may allow the left and right to step a little closer to save the mutual ground they are both standing on. It seems that the question of sustainable development and the defence of the environment is no longer a simple question that can be the property of just one political party, even if it's completely emerald in colour.

Proof of the Pudding…?

In a first this month for a major party, Canada’s opposition Liberals elected former environment minister Stephane Dion as their leader, based mainly on his campaign on green issues. Dion focused on the need to cut emissions from the booming Alberta oil area and we will be keeping our eyes on his progress, whilst weighing up the environmental costs of the alternatives.

Across the globe in the UK, Tony Blair made global warming one of the key themes of Britain's Group of Eight and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel has pledged to continue the campaign when her government takes over the presidencies of the European Union and the G8 in 2007.

Climate change is now regarded in Europe as ‘really important’ by 93 percent of the population and viewed as the number two issue behind unemployment.

Fuelling the situation and growth of this trend are reports by The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, who have predicted that the average global temperature will increase between 1.4 to 5.8 degrees Celsius by 2100, which will lead to rising sea levels as ice caps melt and make so many other “unknown” weather pattern changes around the planet.

Nicholas Stern
The publication of a hard-hitting report in October 2006 by Nicholas Stern, a former World Bank chief economist, concentrated world minds on climate change even more, when he announced that dramatic climatic changes could quite possibly lead to an economic upheaval on the scale of the 1930s Depression.

Lilla,

A brilliantly informative post well written, well presented and illustrated.

Do I understand that you did not write it yourself but drew on the strengths of others?. It is superbly written and I do hope you are not offended by my question.

No-one could question your position as environmental warrior, but I need to know what is written by the blogger and what is taken from other sources, which you have, of course, indicated quite diligently.

I have the same problem with Adrian's work. It was not so much that he was making unsubstantiated claims but that others were crediting him with the work and when I questioned him, he was the first to admit he had not written all of it.

I hope you do not find this offensive. There are a lot of people on Orble claiming work as original which they have, infact, taken from elsewhere.

I am not inferring this applies to you, sometimes their work seems to be a mixture.

It appears that this is all taken from other sources but that you have put it all together. Am I right or wrong about that?.

The environment is such an important issue and I find no fault with anything you have said here. It's rather a relief to think politicians are at last taking things more seriously and full credit to people like yourself.

I find myself turning off electricity more and being a bit more careful with water consumption.

Great report there Lilla!

I truly hope that there will be a good change on 2007 and we will work towards a better environment and not make it worse.

Next US presidential election should be very interesting. ^_^

Thanks for reporting this to us.

Yay KAtyzzz,

I hear you... I'm a trained journalist by trade with a MAsters in journalism. It’s what I do as a professional.

To give you an idea, … this story started a week ago for me with another I did whilst digging around information on Hillary Clinton and Tony Blair about the G8 plans for the handover in 2007. Hillary Clinton, I noticed had jumped on a few green causes around America in pre-election wind-up mode.. I was trying to ascertain sincerity over political grandstanding… I then received an article in an e-zine which suggested the very thought I was 'mulling over' - that there is a growing global trend towards using the environment as a way to get votes – that is what I call my writers hunch. I believe hunches are the hounds of heaven and I follow them… every writer does, or should...

The fact that politicians are using global warming to garner votes both alarms me and delights me all at once…

For a start : facts are facts no matter how you say them and a professional journalist double checks everyone of them to see if the information is true and correct before saying them - for example that Tony Blair did say that, Arnie did make that claim and commitment and that France is about to go to the polls again in 2007. ... a journalist watch dogs and then condenses the information by distilling it for the lay person to understand. Sure it’s not as pure as if you did the research and work yourself and is filtered through the writer’s prejudices and opinions… but isn’t everything you don’t do yourself? Usually the final product reveals about one-eighth of the research and reading that goes into a good article. This one was complex because I needed to check many sources.

I hope that answers your question and now I would like to ask why you asked... do you want to write more Ktz? My advice…

Read heaps, note details, names and web-addresses and then after you have gathered all you can, throw it all away and write it again yourself, using only the facts, names, places, dates, times and events as you have noted them. String it together with your original ‘ thread’ and bob's your uncle. Get highlighters too, to highlight the paragraphs that include the information you want to use...when writing for information only and not profit or job, you may copy and paste 10% of the original work written without permissions.

This post took too many hours [nearly four] to create - by the time I had found all the usable photo's on Wikipaedia. Mind you, because they are politicians and public figures you don't need permission to photograph them... but you do need permission to use photo’s that other's have taken of them and that is just too much effort for free...[or .20 cents].. that is where Wiki is good...

So, I’m off now to have an evening with my family as I feel I have served Orble enough for one day…

Goodnight,
Lilla…

Lilla,

It was an exceptionally good article, one of the best written I have ever read. That's what prompted the question, no-one else here comes up with anything like that standard.

It rather took me by surprise, I didn't realise your professional background, and you do have an interest in so many areas.

This article was without compare and you should be very proud of that and I am not just judging by Orble's so called standards.

I don't have your patience or your commitment. I am committed to other things and have many difficult years ahead of me, but circumstances may force some change.

I have had a few professional writing assignments, but patience is not my strong point. I have had a few books 'almost published' with some being quite apologetic about not being able to do so. But, I am not claiming your writing excellence.

Beyond writing, your sense of commitment is shining like a beacon. I hope you enjoy that well earned rest. Comments on 'that post' of mine are starting to improve after the flack I was copping, mostly undeserved I must say. Hope the party spirits have worn off. I'm still recovering from my wild elderberry (or whatever) syrup, must have been some natural fermentation going on.

Hi Lilla,

I've just stumbled onto this blog. My goodness, now I have so much more reading to do.

Great post by the way. I want to ask your opinion. Did you hear the newstory that Sydney will be blacked out for one hour on 31 March 2007 at 7.30pm basically to see how much electricity is saved, flow on affects etc etc.

Your SMH link

What is your opinion on that?

Love & stuff

Hey Katzzz,

it's all good and I'm glad we are clear... I never doubted you were sincere in your inquiry which is why I answered it... I sense no malice...and am interested now that you have written... I think there is more to you than many realise and whatever is said and done, if Orble didn't even offer 20 cents (or the promise of it) I wonder how many would continue to blogg... the abandoned list grows longer each day...

I use my bloggs to sharpen my writting skills and for exactly the reasons I wrote this one... to better my time in getting it down pat in 3 hours, then 2 hours and then (if possible) 1... it's the personal challenge of a perfectionist who sometimes drives herself nuts...*lol*

I'm off for a long day at work...
Be well, Cheers

Hello Mrs M,

lovelly to see you again... yes I am aware of it and can't wait... I think it would be once a week for the entire civilised world. One hour a week with no electricity... maybe Sunday evening 8pm - 9pm... I don't have time to look at the times they are recommending because I have to go to work, but will later...

do you know they have proven that an evening spent by candle light enduces a much deeper sleep on those who have spent it thus...

I do often and sleep like a log, no doubts about it... showering by candlelight is another habit of mine... everyone should try it... pure magic...I always feel cleaner *lol*

I wrote a poem for you after the party the other night at Ash's and then Ash's computer glich scrubbed some of my comments and so I drop by one of your posts tomorrow probably and play it again, sam...

Cheerio Mrs M(arshmallow)

Thank you Lily, not sure why, but I am pleased you are...

It's just that I have been called to help out with some (tarot) readings today and it means a 12 hour day and I am really already running late... I only work part-time when called in this sphere and always really enjoy the diversity from the other stuff...*lol*

cheers mon cher,
be well, be happy,

It will be interesting to see who will actually 'do' rather than just 'talk' about it all.
14. December 19th 2006 @ 21:53. Lilla Says:
Indeed MeliisaA... as I said it scares me either way... but looking on the bright side, I guess you could say that at least they are talking.... no action on this one has dire consequeneces not just a poor health system or bad economy, but probably millions of deaths and no economy... surely the politicians want to keep their jobs, that means making sure there need wage earners paying for them... I am hopeful that this issue is paradox enough to warrant action... one would hope they realise that...?

I suppose we can do our bit by ensuring our vote goes to someone committed to a greener future, not just in word but in policy, plan and proposals... it'll take more than IR reform to get my vote, that's for sure...

Have you ever had a nightmare that being an enviro-warrior, you are just a tool of the Anglo establishment. Like Prince Philip and the world wildlife fund.
Or maybe you are secretly ( even to yourself) an agent of a powerful real estate cartel. You ban nuclear power, coal, even oil, in order to keep certain real estate pristine and preserved for the ultra rich, who may need it for their families next generation, after they have killed off nine-tenth of the world population. Real estate, what a deal, a real crash! Masquerading as a greenie.

Howard,

Gosh, prime real estate? Hmmm, yes, after all the evil fuels are gone, I’ll build new mud brick condo’s ..

Prince Charles?

*l-ing ol, loudly* too funny ...

As for dear ole Roscoe, I think that bottle is full of ethanol - more than he puts in his tank!

Masquerading up a tree,

Well my dear Lila, you were probably around and political conscious when the Rockefellers and Standard Oil and ARCO backed the first Earth Day and Sun Day in April, I think 1972. Also, you may remember a scholastic (and sophomoric) tome called "Limits to Growth" by the Forest and Meadows team at M.I.T..
Or perhaps I can reawake your educational memory of a certain depraved Parson Malthus, who in the name of the British Empire declared that genocide of the Irish, the working class Brits or the Indians was just the way things were. Before you pooh, pooh this, think about what you think about nuclear energy?

Is it good? Why not? Is it polluting? Compared to what? What is the next phase of human progress in energy production after nuclear energy? Or, have we as humans reached the end of progress?
Is this a scientific, moral question? Or is it determined by the usual romantic drivel? You know, "you take paradise, put up a parking lot, hah hah hah" and other rockn roll brainwashing.
21. February 5th 2007 @ 00:59. Lilla Says:
My Dear Anon,

Firstly, sweetie, my name has two-L’s, thanks...

Secondly, I don’t think I’ve poo-poohed anybody who takes the time to comment and in fact think our wires are crossed, because in other posts you will see that I have written about –and supported – nuclear fusion as a possible [clean and safe] way ahead. Well, I think the politicians will incorporate it whether I like it or not, anyway.

Although I'm not a expert on American politics, it fits the bill globally, doesn’t it? It helps the oligarchy process to continue, generates revenue and corporate bottom lines for executives, corporations and politicians, and keeps the poor employed, what else is there?

Where else would you go with population expansion and Peak Oil going the way it is?

Personally, having recently read Alvin Toffler’s, Third Wave, I prefer the idea of everyone going back to a peaceful ‘first wave’ of self-sufficient farming communities, barter-trade and luddite-type skills. To me it’s where we came from and where we belong … but then I have been called a Luddite before, many times. I don’t mind putting in the hard work, you see.

But this need not be as barbaric as it once was, as technology can now give us solar power, wind turbines and so many green technologies that would make self sufficiency so much easier than ever before…

Who knows? We may all get lucky, you never know, as Peak Oil slowly kills off the modern-day ‘suburbia,’ forcing everyone back onto the land... but then who needs a government?

Yes rock ‘n’ roll will dictate it to some degree, no doubts … although it may just reflect it too.

Thanks for your comments,
Always appreciated.
Lilla

Dear Lilla,

It was an error, that last anon was me, Howard of Realcrash.com. The question is can we dare to be wise? Can we face that we have an oligarchical enemy, the sucessors to the British (or Brutish) empire, who can't have their system unless everyone is stupid. And if every one is stupid, then 5 billion or so people will die, in an unpleasant manner, eh? Because otherwise globalization, and environmentalism and free enterprise even if it kills, will not be tolerated.
It's just the problem of populist idiocy. We're all going to escape into a Tarzan movie or something? Come on, let's have some self-respect!
23. February 5th 2007 @ 02:37. Lilla Says:
Howard,

nice to know it was someone I actually know, who takes responsibility for themselves, thanks. It makes more sense now.

Yes you are right in that respect *lol* I agree. As for self respect, I think it will be each man and woman for him or herself... and for me a Tarzan movie is okay.

You'll get your opportunity to choose your eutopia too, no doubts.

btw, what would you have us all doing without NUclear Fusion, ethanol and peak oil?

Humour me,
I'm curious,

Lilla
