Water Bins Save Water...

Standard US Rain Barrels

Whether it's made from a recycled food grade plastic, a do it yourself model made from a trash bin, or a refurbished whiskey barrel, a rain barrel is one gardening practice that makes complete sense. Rain barrels are not just for gardeners in arid or rainy climates either. Using barrels to collect rainwater saves everyone money on their water bill and it's an easy way to do your share in making gardens greener.

Rain barrels are quite simple, consisting of a barrel, a lid to keep mosquitoes and critters out, an overflow spout or drain, and a spigot or hose connection. A rain barrel is placed under the downspout(s) to collect rainwater that normally flows into a storm sewer or onto the lawn. The water is recycled and used to water your plants and vegetable garden.

Some municipalities encourage the use of rain barrels and offer discounted prices on the larger barrels and bins available. Check with your local council…Rain barrels are sold in many shapes and sizes. In the US some models have built in pumps as well, not sure about Aussie equivalents.

Lilla,

Good one, afriend of mine has several, they cost a fortune.

How can I get more clicks?, boo, hoo. I'm saving up for a haircut with my Orble earnings, hope to get it mid 2007, and my haircuts only cost $15. Must I declare this to inland revenue?

katyzzz...you Goose, oops , sorry!

It seems like it could be done with plastic garbage cans like we use here in California. Yes?

Absolutely my astute friend... I just used this picture to avoid a long explanation of what "rain barrels / bins" actually meant...but anything will do, indeed! With the situation the way it is becoming, I think anything is useful and our responsibility to initiate... I actually think all landlords should be made to install big water tanks and rain barrells for tennants as well... what do you think ..?

Strategically placed around the downpipes, these barrels of water can be used for everything from flushing toilets, to filling the washing machine; watering gardens, washing the car/dog/boat/trailer, and even as really clean drinking water if you have a kitchen-top filtreation unit of some kind..tastes so good! We save so much money on excess water bills... do you pay excess in the states Deorre... I've read that California is particularly hard hit for water shortage...(?) would love a first hand comment from you...

I've been wondering about these for a while - our neighbours used to have one, but so far I haven't come across one anywhere.

On a side note, maybe you could include this link in a new post - it's a water survey you might be interested in.

Hi MelissaA,

thanks for the suggestion, although I'm not sure that I follow completely...(?) I asked this question a few posts ago and had some interesting interest from those within Orble on 'what they are doing to save water?'

Aah, perhaps becuase it was added to Emoto's work it went unnoticed...? good point...

I'll have a look at it again...

thanks

I've been trying to prepare a blog in between things and I just thought I'd pop on over here for a minute or 2 - obviouly brain isn't functioning correctly - oooh look there's drink all over the floor now....."look away".....

Very interesting information you've got there Lilla!

Nowadays my boss in the office are trying to design building with rain captures so that they can be used for gardening use instead of using pipe water. There are a lot of proposals on the designs but I am not sure whether they can be pulled of over the governments here in Malaysia. Since Malaysia always have monsoon season with loads of rain, guess this is another good way to conserve water rather than going into the monsoon drains flood everywhere.

interesting comment Jessica...

I don't know about you, but that's the real crime, isn't it...we (as a species) can walk on the moon and yet cannot gather enough of the water that falls off into the salty tables during the wet season, to store and use during the dry times.... what a wonderful set of priorities... nothing like hindsight is there, it's always 20/20...*chuckling sardonically*

I hope your bosses have a breakthrough in thinking...maybe you could have a peek over their shoulders and make suggestions... sometimes the simplest things are hardest to find and easiest to implement... in my limited experience in hydraulic engineering... much can be lost in complicated complication if designers are not careful, and something town planners and designers are always trying to avoid ...

sometimes, it's these times that require a cry from the wilderness...

Well, however good the plans are, if the client doesn't like it then it is still back to square one...

Lets hope that the future clients are environment savvy... but to have a developing country vs environment, it is really hard to say who wins... especially on the government side.

I am trying to plant some vegetables I bought from the market again. They can be easily grown. Now I just hope that they'll root and then I can transfer them to the pots. ^_^

Jes,

what type of company do you work for... what do they design... it sounds really interesting...(?)

What vegies have you planted....?

I work in an architect firm at the moment. ^_^

They designs residential buildings and link houses. Recently we are tendering for a more environment friendly condo or link houses. Putting some enovation designs on the desk.

Well, it is called "daun salem" in Malay. The Malays here like to eat it fresh and they are easily grown... I think it is in the mint family as it tastes minty and excellent when eat with spicy food. To ease your stomach from the hot spicy ingredients.

I still take rice (it's relatively cheaper here to get outside economy rice - vege, meat and rice) so I will add these vege leaves.
