An Early Morning Rant ~ The Problem with the World is …

Whilst it has become increasingly popular to complain about the negativity of environmentalists as wailing Cassandra’s, the truth is, that for those who understand Lester R. Brown’s book, Plan B 2.0, or Andrew Simms’, Ecological Debt : The health of the planet and the wealth of nations, the frightening outer fringes of the truth of climate-change-induced chaos are already visible, today.

In fact, as the earth continues to warm, rainfall diminish and rivers dry up; reality reveals (daily), the accuracy of Brown’s disturbing litany of predictions, statistics and species extinctions. Policy-makers would be wiser perhaps, to keep in mind that Cassandra was right when she foresaw the destruction of Troy, despite being cursed.

A 21st c. Hyper-mall
Brown’s astute observations lead one to the awful image of the world’s poorest people competing for water and food, against crops needed for the biofuels industry, the latter, just to keep the developed nations SUV’s on the road. It hits home hard when you see it in perspective, especially as oil becomes dearer and dearer, and you already know that it will eventually, run out.

As Simms points out, the truth is that since the 1990’s the share of benefits from economic global growth – actually reaching those nations living on less than a dollar a day - fell by 73%. This was despite endless promises from affluent nations that increased production in third world countries, ‘…would put and end to their poverty.’

So where do we go from here? Any fool can see that we certainly need a rescue plan and Brown’s book certainly offers that. A way to ‘..eradicate poverty, and stabilise the population.’

It’s easy to say, oh that’s easy… advancing technology will compensate the changes automatically ... there, damage averted, re-routed, diverted... But realistically, it is both simplistic and naïve to hold a 'technologically optimistic vision' of a better future, because it places too much faith in change eventuating from the result of rational decisions and sensible policies.

History has already proven again and again, that this couldn’t be further from the truth, as the endless debates and action taken by those in power, continues to tiptoe around the real problems of power and politics itself. This is true even of the home grown algae-Hydrogen market, currently taking off in the Californian desert, as a cost effective means to solving our future fuel crisis? (refer to my next post, coming soon – link to be added)…

Whichever way you look at it, the problems facing the ‘greenies’ are nothing short of diabolical in their need to devise a bio-sustainable-system that allows the feeding of the masses whilst saving the Whales; the control of factories spewing out tons of greenhouse pollutants, whilst continuing to provide consumer goods to a greedy west; all the while, trying to re-engineer a new, effective system for the basics of current global economics.

Countries Most In Debt - Without SUV's

For me, Andrew Simms summed it up best when he wrote in New Scientist recently:

In a nutshell that means finding a way to meet the basic needs of the world’s people while squeezing all our economic activity back into the biosphere’s carrying capacity.[/

Simms concluded with;

Even with Brown’s, Plan B to tell us which renewable energy technologies to use and which resilient food crops to grow, we still need a way to deal with economic vested interests and the democratic deficit in global financial institutions that excludes the poor.

For that we need a Plan C

Gosh Lilla, how can you form such comprehensive thoughts in an 'Early Morning Rant'?

I like the cat. That's as much as I can take in right now.

Be back after toast cut into soldiers.

MIchaelie,

Good morning *laughs* it is perhaps the only time of the day that I can form a comprehensive thought about anything at all *chuckle* by the end of a morning filled with the daily grind of home schooling and housework, I'm usually not sure if I even have a brain (that I can call my own) ... and by the six o'clock news... I have usually forgotten not only my name, but the year it is as well!

I hope you do come back after your rather excellent sounding breakfast ...and can make some sense of it all... because if my early morning clarity is also fading??? *giggle* then i truly am stuffed, aren't I *laughs*

Great to see you...

It is obviously important for us to encounter each other at exactly the right moment! Hope I've nailed it, as I am thoroughly energised now from my toast soldiers.

OK Lilla, what is Plan C? I don't know enough about all this (it appears you are homeschooling me as well, lol) but I find that it's all very complex. Every action has a reaction, etc. but we end up going in a great big circle - or at least I do - finding a lot of idealism and not a lot of pragmatism.

But you are eminently sensible, I see, and know that there is no simple magic solution that is realistic in a capitalist world.

Therefore I'm more likely to respect any ideas you have.

So Lilla... What is Plan C?

Michaelie

PS Can I have a gold star? Or will I get ruler across palms?

Much like ecosystems, renewable energies and economics are a delicate balance. It is going to be difficult to reconcile this problem, particularly when governments seem to want to turn a blind eye to both.

Great post...

Seems like the solutions are just becoming part of the problem, I wonder if they get to planC if we wll need a D and so on...starting to feel lke a bad George Orwell movie or something.

Again Great post..

Great post! Not a rant really! A Plan c is defintely needed!

7. October 9th 2007 @ 04:58. Lilla Says:
MIchaelie,

I am not really sure what Plan C will be... but as I said, I don’t think it'll work anyway, if they invent it, because again we are relying on rational decisions and sensible policies from current governments?

Oh Pleeease... as if that's going to happen. *tongue firmly in cheek* Nope, I think it's up to the Indigo children to take their places in parliaments around the world by January 10th 2008 - as planned by the Grand Masters - and start to make their own Plan C… as the Astrologers and Pluto’s current shift, presages.

/seriously/ Whatever Plan C contains, I'm sure it'll have to include four of the seven Liberal Arts : Geometry, Astronomy, Logic and Arithmetic - if not all seven - because intelligence is required in parliament too I s'pose *chuckle* but since we are talking politics regarding the implementation of any plan through the halls of “POWER” …well, I can't imagine any of the liberal arts being involved when corporate profit is on the line, can you?

*getting sadder*

Please don’t worry about punishment here, I run a very open-minded classroom where all questioning is good. *giggle* In fact it is probably the most highly prized thing of value guaranteeing you a gold star!.

Hope your day is blessed.

8. October 9th 2007 @ 05:01. Lilla Says:
Absolutely Nina,

...and I know there is always a solution to most problems... but this time perhaps, not from us. As has been suggested, perhaps from Mother Nature herself?

who knows...except that I do know we can each communicate with the planet directly... in the next few posts I'm going to do a feature on rain dancing and its effectiveness, as I have experienced it first hand.

More soon. Stay well.

Hi Louie,

Seems like the solutions are just becoming part of the problem..

So true and with no end to the play of politics and power in sight. I don't think a hundred plans would be worth the blanket implementation of just one Plan that restores the balance somehow.

Good to see you...

10. October 9th 2007 @ 05:05. Lilla Says:
Thanks MIss,

Let's hope it's one that grabs the attention of the UN policy makers to the point of implementation... *hmmpf* yeah right?

Hope your day is special...

Another sad state of affairs Lilla

Especially when you consider that the richest man in the world, overtaking Bill Gates, is a Mexican and his country is one of the hot zones on that map you have shown. Imagine what his bank account could do to help his country.

This book sounds like a great read. I recall your post about it and flitted back to read over it again - those figures are shocking!

It amazes me how people note the importance of the past for things which they deem necessary to prove their point, but when it comes to something like climate change, which seems to be another 'tree-huggers' fantasy world, then history is useless.

Ghost towns are not deserted for nothing... and there is no coincidence that they are in the middle of a desert with tumbleweed blowing down the main street....

I`m not sure if you are familiar with the Tribewanted project but if more like it keep popping up maybe there is a little more hope in the world!

Look forward to learning about
the home grown algae-Hydrogen market, currently taking off in the Californian desert, as a cost effective means to solving our future fuel crisis?

Hope you managed to stay out of those lightning zaps last night... the skies are looking gorgeous again and that breeze is heaven sent

Hi Ash,

Thanks for another great comment, it’s always so nice to touch base with you and I recommend the read, although I am only part way through it myself… well had to skim it really, as I have so many books ‘waiting.’

Hmmm, what you say about using history when it suits, is spot on!

You know, Vorovoro certainly sounds like an interesting experiment which could well answer Damo’s recent question, once and for all *chuckle* …as always, thanks for the interesting link.

What a storm! We got caught in the D/bay community hall at 5pm - where Youngest was having acting lessons… wow it was a complete white-out. The hail was amazing and I thought the wind would lift the car… scary. SES is out tonight, tarping roofs where they are missing. A huge Tree branch just missed my car *huge sigh* was praying hard!

Hope it missed your place, I don’t think it did bypassed Bribie?

Hugs.

That's it.
I'm going back to my planet.

the real problems of power and politics itself
is a need to stop
change eventuating from the result of rational decisions and sensible policies

That would require abdication of monopoly.

Why isn't there a cure for the common cold?
Why were lifelong gurantee, water fuelled ceramic engines never manufactured?
Why do I always try to answer such thought provoking posts at a time when my thoughts are swimming through molasses?? (it's now 1:24am)

Hope you're well (and asleep) LL...

I got you beat Dusk, 1.41am.

Okay Lilla, here's what I think. I don't know if it will make sense because I should be asleep now.

I don't think anyone really does anything because we can't really see the danger. It's not imminent so the urgency isn't there. I mean, there is urgency...but you know what I mean.

Farmers are all struggling and I understand that but my supermarket shelves are still full of food so I don't/can't really appreciate the severity of this drought. Sure stuff costs more but....

The world as we know it still carrying on as we've always known it. Ash telling stories of lining up for hours for petrol boggles my mind. But that hasn't happened here yet so we probably still use our cars more than we should.

Does that make sense?

Sometimes I feel guilty for bringing kids into this crappy world. And then I feel guilty that if it gets worse my kids may decide to not have their own because of the crappy planet that we live in. What a horrible way to go.

I'm off now. You had an early morning rant, I have a very late or very early response.

Love & stuff

Dusk,

I’m coming with you… beam away Scottie. If only it was that simple.

That would require abdication of monopoly.
Spot ON! As if that’s going to happen… so I guess it all comes back to the individual as always... we are powerful than we realise.

I don’t know about why water fuelled ceramic engines were never manufactured, but I can add something to the common cold theory, and that is, that there is no cure because your body is just cleaning out the gunk that has accumulated from (a) living wrong, or (b) travelling a long way down the freeway, (c) living in polluted cities (d) an green Goblin attack!

We know that the body shuts down the brain first, sealing it with fluid. It then creates tons of mucus to help protect all the areas that need protection, to carry the germs away (as phlegm)…

We all got that, but there is a school of thought, that believe colds and flu are caused by an entity that resembles a green ball of phlegm (like the Green Goblin)… The air-scooter he rides is earthly bacteria. When we eat well, rest plenty and drink water, keep positive and have a reason to live (ie lots of love), we are resilient to him, but when we run ourselves down, find ourselves in a blue funk, then we must do battle and our bodies are the battlefields…

Apparently, the Goblin lives in old people mostly and they are deadly if they cough on you. I didn’t put much stock in this old folktale, until I met this particular old lady, who was always sick with bronchitis or a cold, and such an unsuspecting carrier of the Goblin genes. I remember she put her hand on my back whilst she was leaning over me one day, and I felt a burning sensation in the middle of my back – under her hand. It’s still there and I know he tries to get in right there, into my lungs…

Using light and crystals, I have not succumbed now for six years, but this week… I am not so sure I can resist any more, and it is my time for the flu. Where is Spiderman when you need him? *chuckle*

I do not know how you can be awake that late DUsk, but I am so glad you stopped by, it's always a joy to see you.

Hope you rested well,

Lilla …

Hi Mrs M,

Another night owl?

I loved your answer and agree on all points, as I said to Dusk, as individual consumers I think we are more powerful that we all realise… but as you say, we just don’t realise it, because we don’t see it… I guess that’s why I chose to do this post, in a way… to keep it in the public eye. Governments don’t seem keen to do so, do they? .. and yet it is so very important that we all stop and think before we ‘..buy a second one.’

I remember reading about a survey they did of American city children in primary schools, asking where milk came from. Something like 70% replied ‘…from the supermarket.’ The mind boggles....they had no idea of the connection to the land of everything that we can possess?

As I’ve said before, I think most people think that little alien space craft come in the dead of night (perhaps leaving crop circles in their wake?) …but certainly leaving great piles of money for us to keep accumulating… sheesh!

Sometimes I feel guilty for bringing kids into this crappy world. And then I feel guilty that if it gets worse my kids may decide to not have their own because of the crappy planet that we live in. What a horrible way to go.
- Ooh so true, I couldn’t say it any better!! I find it hard to juggle between reality and trying to foster a positive outlook in their minds, so essential to their happiness.

I do not know how you can stay up so late, (but can remember something vaguely familiar about a young family), I am so glad you visited.

Hope you slept well (after toddlers went back to bed?) ...

Lotsa Luv

Lilla …
